My Father, the Tax Attorney

As a kid, how many times have you been asked what your father did for a living, and I answer, “My father is a tax attorney.” The person who asked me just nod in resignation when I give them my answer.  I say resignation because they don’t have a clue as to what a tax attorney is. But truth be told, I was always relieved that they didn’t make any further queries as I myself didn’t know. I vowed that one day I would know. And that day has come.
My father is a legal professional who people seek for advice about anything from tax planning to representation in tax disputes. He also advises and lectures people on the legal intricacies that compound tax laws and shares his expertise on how they can minimize their tax liabilities or obligations in, of course, a very legal manner.
Many people whom my father has provided his services to, call him a very experienced and capable tax attorney because he has helped them figure out how to minimize their taxes, how they can get rebates or exemptions and how they can avail of the best possible arrangement for filing returns. Moreover, they say that my father is so good that he is able to advise them on the different laws that different states adhere to. They realize now that consulting with him first makes the possibility of them running into trouble with the government or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) impossible. They now say that tax planning is the way to go for the taxpaying public including senior citizens.

But over and beyond tax planning, my father is also an expert in helping people or companies who are being investigated by the IRS for either tax evasion or fraud or both. And when his client is found guilty, he works things out with the IRS in settling for a reduction in penalties, or come up with an out of court settlement agreeable to all parties concerned.
So now you ask what about accountants and tax advisors. To that I say consulting with a tax attorney like my father is a better option because if worse comes to worst, the court cannot mandate my father to appear in court as witness against you and all of your correspondence with him shall remain confidential. Unfortunately, I cannot the say same things for accountants or advisors.
So there, I think I have more or less aptly described what my father does as a tax relief attorney. And it gives me a sense of pride that he’s all that and more.
